The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences with its ten departments and centers focuses on interdisciplinarity and innovation in research and teaching. The faculty offers its nearly 800 students a variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary degree programs, many of which are unique in Switzerland. Professorship in Jewish Studies (75%, open rank, temporary)

As the holder of the professorship (m/f/d), you will be responsible for the subject area of Jewish Studies and deal with questions relating to the history of Jewish experiences and related fields, with a possible focus on cultural studies, literary studies, sociology (of religions) or history. Possible fields of research include processes of secularisation, (inter)mediality, cultural memory, diversity and gender, identity or diaspora since the early modern period. You represent the subject in a lasting and visible way in research and teaching.

You will contribute your experience in teaching and supervising students to the integrated degree programme in Cultural Studies and to the BA and MA degree programmes. Experience with interdisciplinary degree programmes is desirable. Experience in the implementation of online teaching for the design of distance learning programmes is an advantage.


In addition to high-quality teaching, you have an outstanding research record. This is based on research achievements such as national and international publications, third-party funding acquired to date, as well as prizes and other awards, in accordance with the academic age to be calculated. A compatibility to the Faculty’s main research areas is desirable. In cooperation with representatives of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Chair of Jewish Studies and Theology at the Faculty of Theology, the holder of the Professorship in Jewish Studies should contribute to raising the profile of Jewish Studies at the University of Lucerne.

The recruitment requirements are based on § 2 of the Berufungsreglement (appointment regulations) of the University of Lucerne. For an assistant professorship (without tenure track) a completed doctorate is required, for a full professorship additionally a habilitation or habilitation-equivalent achievements in Jewish Studies. Part-time professorships are possible.

You have German language skills at level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, or will acquire these within a reasonable period of time.
