The position is part of the PIA Caesar Excellences, one of its characteristics is the development of a strong international dimension.  The selected candidate will have a « research » mission and a « teaching » mission (university level) around the Holocaust and genocidal enterprises.

Research mission

The main mission of the candidate will be to develop high-level research on the Holocaust and genocide entreprises. They will develop and participate in the coordination of the overall work on this subject within the framework of the University of Caen. The search for content is focused on the memory of the Holocaust and genocidal enterprises, it is articulated with cutting-edge research on digital documents that will allow their development and dissemination to different audiences and which is the axis of the PIA CAESAR Excellences of research.

While having a solid command of general studies on the Holocaust, the candidate must be able to develop their research by emphasizing the articulation between micro and macro history, the exploitation of testimonies, the importance of spatiality in the course of deportations and massacres in Western Europe,  Central and Eastern. A strong interest in the reception of the Shoah, its interpretation and its transmission of remembrance in countries outside the European and North American zone will be appreciated.

The selected candidate will register their work within the framework of their future laboratory, the Research Team on Literatures, Imaginaries and Societies (ERLIS), which is characterized by the diversity of the cultural and linguistic areas represented, as well as in the MRSH CNRS University of Caen, a center of excellence for digital humanities. The candidate is not expected to have digital  competencies but they are expected to have an interest in interdisciplinary work and  they will work in relation to the digital document division.

They will diversify collaborations as much as possible, including fields apparently far removed from the theme of the Holocaust, the candidate will establish collaborative relationships with colleagues at the university and bring their expertise to current projects as well as to those likely to emerge in  their disciplinary field of reference. They will also be able to respond to calls for projects at national and international level and to ensure the follow-up of funding applications.

In order to ensure the development of studies on the Holocaust and genocides, the candidate, who already has a strong institutional network, will develop relations internationally, but also locally.

Teaching mission

The selected candidate will be able to intervene at the request of teachers in  topics related to genocidal enterprises and the Holocaust, such as, for example, nationalism, racism and anti-Semitism. As part of seminars organized in coordination with the laboratories hosted at the MRSH, the candidate will raise students’ awareness of research. A very good knowledge of local, national and international archival resources is required. Their activity will also have an educational dimension in connection with the Rectorat de Caen for an audience of high and middle schoolers.

Publication(s), monograph(s) recognized for their quality and articles in international peer-reviewed journals are an asset for this recruitment.

Affiliated laboratory: The selected candidate will be attached to the ERLIS laboratory (UR 4254), University of Caen Normandy (https://erlis.unicaen.fr/presentation) and to the MRSH (https://mrsh.unicaen.fr)

Place of practice: The position is based on Campus 1, University of Caen Normandy, 14000 Caen.  The preferred work location will be the Maison de la Recherche en Sciences Humaines (MRSH, https://mrsh.unicaen.fr/).

Travels to be expected (the selected candidate will carry out research in various archival collections and will  take into account the diversity of the processes of annihilation of populations in Western, Central and Eastern Europe).

Internal Relations:

Attached to the ERLIS laboratory (Research Team on Literatures, Imaginaries and Societies), and to the MRSH, the candidate will create synergies with the UFRs and laboratories of the University of Caen by establishing relationships with fields outside the fields directly related to the Holocaust and genocidal enterprises (History, literature, sociology).

External relations at the University of Caen:

Collaborative and exchange relations will be developed with French organizations related to the Holocaust, the Second World War and genocidal enterprises at a local level (Caen Memorial), national level (Foundation for the Memory of the Shoah, Shoah Memorial, Maison des enfants d’Izieu, Yahad-in Unum, etc.). International development will be a fundamental part of the mission to be carried out. Relationships will be established and intensified with institutions that are important in the field of Holocaust research and education abroad (Yad Vashem, Memorial, EHRI, The Holocaust Educational Foundation of Northwestern University, Leibniz Institute for Contemporary History-Munich, etc.).

Resources (human, material, financial, etc.) made available:

A team composed of a postdoc and a PHd student will be formed around the selected candidate, in addition to the working group already constituted by the researcher affiliated with the Institut Universitaire de France and the MRSH teams. Mission and operational resources are planned. The environment of the MRSH provides significant resources (digital document division, management pool, communication unit, audio-visual resources, support unit for the organization of conferences and missions, etc.). Specific support on the CAESAR Program for the university’s research department (dedicated engineer coordinated with the MRSH support unit).

The candidate will have an office equipped with a computer and screen, on Campus 1.

Indicators for assessing results

Development of work on the theme, production and management of productions on the theme, development of international networking from the University of Caen, development of links and agreements with partner institutions, stabilization of the team that will be gathered around them. Publication(s) in at least one international peer-reviewed journal.
